Writer & Editor

Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Tara Lerman and I’m a writer and editor focused on transforming complex topics into engaging narratives.

I’ve spent my 10 year career in editorial strategy, content production, and people management, leading content teams and crafting compelling stories that makes people think critically about the changing world. Most recently, I was the Senior Managing Editor of Insider Studios at Business Insider, where I collaborated with brands to tell interesting and thought-provoking stories through mediums including interactive hubs, articles, videos, social media campaigns, and more. I’ve also written for various media outlets, including Planetizen, Business Insider, Greater Greater Washington, Neighborhoods.com, Green Philly, The Hill, and Motley Bloom. I enjoy tackling challenging or technical topics and making them digestible, but my sweet spot is anything to do with urbanism, healthcare, psychology, or sustainability. I won’t bore you with any more of the details, but feel free to take a glance at my LinkedIn profile and learn more.

When I’m not writing, I spend most of my time exploring new hobbies and rediscovering old ones. I bring a spirit of curiosity to everything I do, whether it’s rock climbing, cycling, or hiking — and I infuse that same approach into my work as a writer, editor, and journalist.

Featured Work

Branded Content

I’ve worked with startups and Fortune 500 companies alike to craft compelling narratives that increase brand awareness and drive audience engagement. My favorite part of working in branded content is that there is no equation or algorithm for a piece of quality content — but you know one when you see one. That means experimenting with new ideas, mediums and processes is a key part of every project.

Journalism

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of chasing after a great story. I first experienced that sensation at the ripe age of 15, when I began writing for my high school newspaper. Since then I’ve published stories on an array of topics, including politics, city planning, arts & culture, outdoor adventure and more. And the most exciting part is that I’ve only just scratched the surface.

My Takes

I tend to have opinions on many things, and I advocate for the issues that matter to me. I’ve found writing to be the most effective way to stand up for what I believe in.

First Person

When I find something that inspires me, I write about it. Sometimes that takes the form of poetry or creative non-fiction. Other times, it ends up scribbled on a page of an old journal. Either way, writing for me is not only a career — it’s a way to tell my own story.
